So, here’s Part Eight: How to set up your KDP account.

First up, you need to find the Amazon KDP sign up page: https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/

The screen will look like this >>>

To set up your account, click on ‘Sign up’ and follow the on screen prompts with your name, email address, and password >>>

Once you’re done, click on ‘Create your KDP account’.

An OTP code (for login security) will be sent to the email that you’ve entered so that you can log in to to your account. Later, you can set this to an SMS text to your phone if you wish.

Amazon will show you a screen where you’ll need to accept the terms and conditions before you proceed.

Next, you will see the following page >>>

Where you see the yellow warning triangle, click on the ‘Update Now’ option. Here you will need to give Amazon your bank account details, your full name and postal address, and if you’re outside the US your IBAN and SWIFT banking numbers (which you can obtain from your bank). Additionally, you will need to enter your tax information.

Amazon will pay you via bank transfer each month but in arrears. Right now, I’m getting paid for book sales and page reads which happened in March. So, for bank transfer, your payment is about 60 days after your sales.

If you cannot have a bank transfer, then Amazon will pay you via cheque, etc., but these alternative methods come with a minimum payment threshold and longer delays than the 60 days stated above.

If you get stuck in entering your information, help can be found HERE, and also by contacting KDP customer support.

Once you’re all set up, your dashboard will look something like this, but without all the books listed just yet >>>

At the very top of the page, you will see ‘Your Account’. You will need to click on this to set up your KDP account details if you haven’t done so already, or if you needed to leave the account information page and come back to it once you had all your information. You can access the same place via the ‘Your Account’ option.

In my next post on how to publish to KDP, I will show you a more detailed overview of your dashboard, and in future posts, we will look at adding your books and keeping an eye on your sales, etc.

That’s it from me for today. I hope you’ve found this post useful. I’d love to hear from you in the comments below, and I’ll see you all again on Friday, May 22nd, where we’ll be taking a look at an overview of your KDP dashboard.

Today, Harmony Kent’s post on Story Empire deals with setting up a KDP account, and I truly wish I’d had her step-by-step instructions (with screen shots) when I started out. Hope you’ll check out this excellent post, even if you aren’t new to the process, and will pass it along to others so anyone confused by it all will know just what to do. Thanks, and thanks to Harmony for this very helpful series of posts on self-publishing. 🙂

  3. Excellent step-by-step instructions for anyone new to self-publishing on Amazon, Harmony. Wish I’d had this when I started seven years ago! And I happen to know someone personally who might find it extra useful, so I’m not only going to share this on The Write Stuff, I’m going to email him a link to the post, as well. Thanks for all your hard work. It’s invaluable for anyone just starting down this road to self-publishing adventure! 🙂 ❤
