Hi SErs! It’s a day of Harmony here at Story Empire 🙂 Today, we’re wrapping up our series of posts on how to write POV.

The writer has a choice of four POVs and three Tenses:

  1. First Person
  2. Second Person
  3. Third Person Limited (otherwise known as ‘close’)
  4. Third Person Omniscient (otherwise known as ‘distant’)
  5. Past Tense
  6. Present Tense
  7. Future Tense

All the posts in this series:

Part 1, Overview, can be found HERE.

Part 2, First Person, can be found HERE.

Part 3, Second Person, can be found HERE.

Part 4, Third Person Limited, can be found HERE.

Part 5, Third Person Distant, can be found HERE.

Part 6, Common Pitfalls of POV, can be found HERE.

Part 7, How to Choose POV, can be found HERE.

Part 8, Choosing POV, can be found HERE.

POV 9, The Unreliable Narrator and POV, can be found HERE.

POV 10, Choosing Tense and POV, can be found HERE.

Top Tip:

The Tense and POV lens you use will greatly affect the style and feel of your story and have a tremendous impact on how your reader connects to your book. Present and first person tend to be more immediate, while past and third person tend to keep your reader at more of a distance.

Remember: There are NO hard-and-fast rules. You can do anything you want, as long as you do it well and with good reason.

That’s it from me today. I hope you’ve found this series of posts useful. I’ll see you again on Monday 11th April, when we’ll begin a series of posts on how to use prologues.

  2. Thanks so much for the wrap up and links, Harmony! You’ve made it easier to recheck details on the entire excellent series. It’s been a great one, and I know having this page for easy referral will come in handy as a future reference. Well done, my friend! 😀 ❤
